A Mediterranean Oasis In The Center Of Sydney
Anthony Wyer of Wyer + Co. had visions of the Mediterranean when he bought his residence in Sydney’s jap seashores in 2015. Whereas he introduced in some pals so as to add layers to the home (inside designer Marco Meneguzzi for the joinery and finishes; and Tamsin Johnson for textures and antiques), Anthony himself set about designing a backyard impressed by the resort-style options within the structure.
‘We love entertaining and having out of doors areas that work year-round is basically essential to us,’ explains Anthony. This want, coupled with a number of disparate pockets that required cohesion, resulted in a layered, tailor-made design.
The entrance backyard shrouds the streetscape with greenery, the piece de resistance being a stately, 30 yr previous olive tree on the entrance. A paved personal courtyard sits on the primary flooring and enjoys twin Kentia palms and waves of boisterous pink bougainvillea for a tropical contact.
However the rear backyard is the place the design really thrives. Now containing a coated deck, out of doors fire, pool and garden, 23 sq. metres of this house was initially taken up by sandstone outcrop. In a stroke of genius, Anthony and his staff dreamt up the hero of the ultimate design: a poolside cave!
This sheltered pure house is carved out of the prevailing sandstone face and lined with built-in lounges. Stretching 6.3 metres lengthy and 1.5 metres deep, it could actually accommodate as much as 10 individuals and a bounty of vegetation on its rooftop. Rosemary, camellias, agave, yellow brugmansia and spiky fan palms cascade down from this cavetop, dangling in entrance of the cave opening. Anthony and his staff scoured from Victoria to Queensland to seek out vegetation that match their necessities for measurement and maturity.
‘Main excavation work and engineering was required first to construct the cave-like construction but in addition to make sure that it was robust sufficient to carry soil and a backyard on high,’ says Anthony. The fabric palette is straightforward, consisting of terracotta, bamboo, limestone and timber with gentle, pure earthy tones for a modern-Mediterranean really feel.
Regardless of the established design and lived-in really feel, Anthony maintains there are nonetheless some touches to be added. ’You’re by no means actually completed in the case of designing your individual residence or backyard – there’s nearly at all times a chance to push the boundaries and evolve,’ he says.
